Genetics: Biology at the Crime Scene (every student)
All criminals, no matter how careful, leave clues behind. Many of these clues are biological in nature.
We will use various genetic and biological techniques to analyze samples that would be typical of crime scene evidence. You will isolate and analyze DNA from your own hair follicles and saliva. You will determine your blood type and learn how this kind of information can be used in solving crimes. We will study techniques of fingerprinting and gathering latent fingerprints, including how to analyze and compare fingerprints. We will explore the genetic basis for fingerprint patterns and learn how other kinds of genetic evidence are used.
Areas of Emphasis (students choose one)
♦ Global Business
The world is becoming more integrated. Nations are buying and selling more, different cultures are learning about each other, money is flowing from country to country, and governments have to work with other governments more often.
We will look at how global business is conducted, play a game that reveals how money and resources are traded between nations and exchange rates are determined. We will study how business people and tourists learn about other cultures, learn how governments use political tools to increase their wealth, and debate the controversies that arise when corporations cross national boundaries. We will also learn about the exciting events that are happening in the world of business and changing the society we all live in.
♦ Digital Art
Future Michelangelos, Rembrandts, Picassos, Matisses, and O'Keefes will explore the newest medium in the art world - the computer. Applications will utilize the traditional tools of old and modern masters such as paint brushes, palettes, canvases, photos and other drawing tools, but through the use of the newest programs available on the computer. The artists will then take their masterpieces and put them together in a digital museum consisting of individually-created web pages featuring each artist's work.
