Special Edition $100,000 in 100 Days Campaign for Albion Boat Dock
Albion Boat Dock Details
The boat docking facility has been a long time in the making. After visiting the Albion Field Station in 2004, the California Coastal Commission indicated we needed a permit for our boat dock and that it needed to be environmentally acceptable.
It took about five years to satisfy six government agencies, but we have done it and are ready to begin construction next summer. Our window of opportunity is from July 15 to August 15. This is the time of the year that the pile driving will least disrupt the Coho Salmon migration. The pile driving must be done with a vibrating driver rather than a hammer driver so as to further minimize the salmon impact.
The dock will consist of eight floating sections, each six feet wide and twenty feet long. These dock sections will parallel the river by the lagoon on our new property up river. There will be a galvanized steel walkway six feet wide from the shore to the dock. All of this will require 30 twelve-inch diameter steel pilings, each filled with concrete and fitted with connectors that will allow the dock sections to move up and down with the tide.
In order to get all the heavy equipment to the site, a bridge will need to be constructed over the creek that runs the length of the valley. Two deck sections from the Golden Gate Bridge will be used for the surface.
The entire project will be contracted because the college has neither the equipment nor the expertise to do the job. The project will cost approximately $200,000 which includes a contingency of $20,000 for the unexpected.
